How to Prepare Your Dog for a Professional Photo Shoot in Los Angeles!

Booking a photo session for your dog's portraits is exciting, but a little preparation goes a long way toward making sure your dog looks and feels their best. Whether we’re shooting in my Los Angeles studio or running around at the beach or mountains, these 12 tips will help your session go smoothly!

1. Groom in Advance

If your dog needs a full groom, schedule it a few days to a week before the shoot (not the day before). This way their coat looks its best and they’ve adjusted to any trims. A quick brush right before the session helps too.

2. Exercise if They’re High Energy

A walk, run, or play session beforehand helps take the edge off so they’re calmer during the shoot. If your dog is older or not as energetic, maybe don't exercise as much beforehand.

3. Bring Treats They Love

I’ll have plenty on hand, but bringing their absolute favorites can make all the difference when we need extra motivation.

4. Brush Up on Basics

Practice sit, stay, down, or any other commands before the session. Even a quick refresher helps your dog respond faster once we start.

5. Pack Their Favorites

Bring a favorite toy, ball, or blanket. Familiar items not only help relax your pup, but they can also make for cute, personal shots.

6. Simplify Their Look

If you want their collar in photos, remove extra tags or bulky accessories. A clean, minimal collar looks best in images.

7. Coordinate Outfits (for Humans)

If you’ll be in the photos, wear solid, simple colors that won’t distract. Think timeless, not trendy.

8. Arrive Early to Let Them Acclimate

Getting to the location 10–15 minutes early gives your dog time to sniff around, settle, and feel at ease before we start.

9. Avoid Last-Minute Stress

Skip anything hectic the morning of (like a brand-new groomer or vet visit). Calm starts = calm photos.

10. Keep Leashes Simple

Bring a plain leash (no neon patterns or retractables) if we’ll be shooting outdoors. It’ll blend in or be easy to edit out later.

11. Trust the Process

Not every dog “poses” perfectly — and that’s okay. I capture natural expressions, quirks, and fun moments just as much as classic portraits.

12. Stay Calm and Enjoy It

Dogs pick up on your vibe. If you’re relaxed, playful, and patient, they’ll be too. Don’t worry — I’ll get the shots we need!
